Energy from waste plant Viridor - Building community support

Viridor submitted plans for an Energy from Waste (EfW) Combined Heat and Power facility in Cardiff to the Council's Planning Committee. Good Relations advised Viridor on community engagement, media relations and political strategy. Good Relations created a programme of community engagement which included; generating awareness through local media, setting up events, providing information to local residents, developing a website with information on the project, and carrying out meetings with key political figures.

The proposed development is designed to assist Wales in its efforts to deal with excessive use of landfill sites. Cardiff alone produces over 198,000 tonnes of municipal waste. The cost of burying waste in the ground increases every year as the landfill tax grows £8 per tonne a year - currently £48 per tonne.

Good Relations has assisted Viridor in emphasising the environmental benefits of the proposed scheme. Importantly, it will only burn residual waste - waste that is left behind after all practical efforts have been made to extract recyclable and compostable material.
